Hatis NoitAura

Aura is the title track of the 2022 album released by London-based Japanese voice artist and musician Hatis Noit on the British label Erased Tapes.
Inspired by a profound experience of getting lost in the forests of Shiretoko, Hokkaido, her birthplace, the piece reflects a sense of awe and peace as she felt herself dissolving into nature and becoming part of it.
Drawing inspiration from diverse vocal traditions, including Japanese gagaku, folk music, opera, Bulgarian singing, and Gregorian chants, Hatis Noit creates a unique sonic world using only her layered voice, translating emotions and memories that cannot be expressed through words.
The title Aura also draws inspiration from German philosopher Walter Benjamin's concept of the unique, unrepeatable nature of art, exploring the primal power of the human voice and the richness of a singular, shared experience.
Hatis Noit is a Japanese vocal performer hailing from distant Shiretoko in Hokkaido who now resides in London. Her accomplished range is astonishingly self-taught, inspired by everything she could find from Gagaku — Japanese classical music — and operatic styles, Bulgarian and Gregorian chanting, to avant-garde and pop vocalists.
It was at the age of 16, during a trek in Nepal to Buddha's birthplace, when she realised singing was her calling. While staying at a women’s temple in Lumbini, one morning on a walk Hatis Noit heard someone singing. On further investigation it was a female monk singing Buddhist chants, alone. The sound moved her so intensely she was instantly aware of the visceral power of the human voice; a primal and instinctive instrument that connects us to the very essence of humanity, nature and our universe.
The name Hatis Noit itself is taken from Japanese folklore, meaning the stem of the lotus flower. The lotus represents the living world, while its root represents the spirit world, therefore Hatis Noit is what connects the two. For Hatis Noit, music represents the same netherworld with its ability to move and transport us to the other side; the past, a memory, our subconscious.
Piece by piece, her debut album has been reimagined by legendary artists and collaborators, including the godfather of ambient Laraaji, hip hop duo Armand Hammer, composers and electronic producers Jlin, Alex Somers, William Basinski, Emel, Matthew Herbert and Yu Su. The complete Aura Reworks album arrived on September 26, 2025.
She's been making waves on the European music festival circuit with appearances at Womad, Rewire, Le Guess Who? as well as worldwide with appearances at Big Ears Festival, MUTEK Montréal and Wonderfruit, amongst others — receiving standing ovations wherever she goes. As The Guardian put it in their Ones to Watch column: "has been moving audiences to tears."
